Kavanagh Craft Collection

Our Story

The Patrick Kavanagh Collection was created by three Monaghan designer makers, where each piece was envisioned and made with passion in their Monaghan craft studios. Textile designer and handweaver Liz Christy, fused glass artist Grace Brennan and batik artist Louise Loughman were inspired by the poet Patrick Kavanagh.

Kavanagh’s intimate connection with the Monaghan landscape, as expressed through his poetry, provided each designer with a rich source of inspiration for their creations in this collection. The clovers, heathers and earthly palette of the drumlin landscape, is all subtly reflected in this contemporary collection, neatly echoing the poets descriptions of nature, love and life’s journey.

Rich, woven textiles and gifts, vibrant glass designs with bursts of colour and enchanting silks featuring words of poetry are recognisable in every piece.

This beautiful collection of crafts from textile designer and handweaver Liz Christy, fused glass artist Grace Brennan and batik artist Louise Loughman, have all found inspiration in the poems of Patrick Kavanagh and his connection to the Monaghan landscape.

The exhibition at the heart of the stunningly refurbished Kavanagh Centre celebrates the different stages of Patrick Kavanagh’s life and evolution of his poetic craft.

This is achieved through a series of touchscreens, memory boxes, letters and early 20th-century ephemera. The magic and musicality of Kavanagh’s finest poems are celebrated in a short film that also captures the raw beauty of the County Monaghan’s landscape, inspiration for much of Kavanagh’s writing.
