Féile Patrick Byrne are delighted to present a concert with two of Ireland’s foremost traditional musicians, Pádraig McGovern and Sabina McCague. Pádraig and Sabina are a husband and wife duet who share a great interest in old Irish music. It is fitting that they play the two oldest and UNESCO recognised Irish instruments in the harp and the uilleann pipes.
Sabina McCague of Co. Monaghan is one of many multi instrumentalists on the music scene today. Equally proficient on harp and fiddle, she was introduced to traditional music by the fiddle playing of her Grandfather James McCague. At an early age she began fiddle tutelage under Monaghan piper Eamon Curran where she received a solid grounding. She attributes much of her later development to the influences of the late Phelim O’Raghallaigh, Kevin Glackin, the Rooney family, Steve Cooney and harpist Denise Kelly. Sabina holds a Bachelor of Music Degree with the Conservatory of Music and Drama, DIT. She has performed at many festivals in Ireland, Europe and the USA. She is also a recognised teacher having taught at Scoil Eigse, The Joe Mooney Summer School and The Francis O’Neill Irish Arts festival in Chicago but to name a few.
Pádraig McGovern hails from Ballymagovern, a townland in the Cavan-Leitrim border area but has resided in Monaghan town for the best part of a decade. He was taught by Belturbetpiper P.J. Flood and heavily influenced by accordionist Vincent Tighe and the Leitrim researcher and collector Fr. John Quinn. Pádraig has recorded with numerous artists over the past decade, including a duet album with Peter Carberry entitled ‘Forgotten Gems’ (2013) and more recently with the highly acclaimed band on their self-titled album ‘Garadice’. He has worked as a researcher/performer on many projects including ‘The Leitrim Equation 4’ project and the ‘The Pipes, The Pipes’, a show devised by Dónal Dineen and produced by Siobhán O’ Malley. Pádraig has also performed with many household bands and artists including Lúnasa, Dervish, Téada, Gatehouse, Steve Cooney, John Carty and Dónal Lunny.
